VoIP hardware is developing fast - this is where you ask all those “how do I make my SIP Telephone, Adapter or Asterisk box work with my voip provider?” questions.

Guys

I have the option on a number of Cisco 8851 phones for an excellent price.

There does not appear to be much discussion on them with Asterisk systems - even though they are SIP out of the box.

Some of what I have read suggest the config is inline with the older 7945 type devices.

Has anyone here had a play with one?

Thanks Chaps

Never used one of these myself. Are they SIP out of the box? Based on what I have read they appear to be setup for use with Cisco Unified Manager by default with SIP firmware available, just like the 79xx series.

Looks like these are also configurable via XML files and not via a GUI.

How cheap is cheap?
