If it's about VoIP, SIP or Internet Telephony but it doesn't seem to fit anywhere else, post it here.

Hi all,

New to VoIP in general and this looked like the place for UK VoIPers.

I currently have a phone number with Voipfone and have been given a Cisco 7940 phone so initially looking to get them working together. I believe I need to install the latest SIP firmware and configure it to be able to use all the phones available features with Voipfone, so will be doing a lot of reading up.

Any pointers to achieve the above welcome :)

Look forward to being part of the community and learning the ways of the UK VoIP forums...

Good Morning,

Welcome to the forums, always nice to see a new member. :)

It has been some time since I last used a Cisco 79xx IP phone. Check out this post - Cisco IP Phones 79xx Series SIP/VoIP Firmware Files if you haven't done so already; and yes the first thing you need to do is load the sip firmware on the phone.

Second, you need a pc, laptop or netbook on the same LAN as the phone, install a tftp client on the computer and make a note of the IP address of the computer as the phone will need to pull its config files from the computer with the tftp client installed.

Thanks.

I just wrote out a post only to lose it because of this stupid iPhone and buggy old ios 8!

I don't have access to a pc until tomorrow morning so I will post back then. From what I can make out it can't find the config files.

Ah, sorry to hear, very frustrating - thanks for trying though!

I see the instructions say to:

Download the file XMLDefault.cnf.xml from here and copy/paste it in to the TFTP boot folder (/var/lib/tftpboot)

I take it when using TFTP on windows this file has to go in TFTP program folder? I've tried so many configurations with all of the files I think it might be best for me to just wait...

Thank you.

You set the folder your using to store the files, example... Create a folder on your windows desktop PC called 7940 then place all files and firmware in this folder. Launch the ftp server program and set the folder we just created above as the default tftp folder location.

Another great guide https://support.gradwell.com/entries/23 ... figuration

webmin wrote:Also, further examination shows the phone to be already running a SIP firmware:

P0S3-08-6-00

Will this make a difference?

Thanks.
Nope, won't make a difference at all.

All it needs is the Config files now.

See the C:\temp you need to change this to the 7940 folder we created as mentioned above.
